Zoomlion clarifies YEA contract status, reaffirms commitment to sanitation and employment in Ghana

Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the nation’s leading waste management and sanitation firm, has officially responded to recent public discourse concerning its contractual relationship with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA). In a detailed press statement, the company clarified the circumstances surrounding the expiration of its contract and reiterated its unwavering commitment to national development and environmental sustainability.

Natural Expiration, Not Termination

Zoomlion Ghana addressed growing speculation following a letter from the Office of the President dated June 11, 2025, regarding the status of the company’s contract with the YEA under the Street Sweeping Programme.

The company explained that the contract, originally set to expire in March 2024, had been extended by six months and reached its natural conclusion in September 2024. Contrary to misinterpretations circulating in the media, Zoomlion emphasized that the contract was not terminated or cancelled by government authorities.

“For over 19 years, we have maintained a consistent and productive partnership with successive governments through the YEA sanitation module,” the statement read. “This enduring relationship highlights our commitment to Ghana’s sustainable development agenda.”

Zoomlion further noted that the communication from the Presidency did not affect any of its other ongoing contracts or the broader sanitation module under YEA.

Backing Government’s Move to Competitive Procurement

Zoomlion welcomed the government’s announcement to initiate competitive procurement for future sanitation contracts, aligning itself with efforts to promote transparency and value for money. The company confirmed that its now-expired YEA contract had originally been competitively procured in 2019.

“As a firm that upholds merit-based processes, we are ready and eager to participate in any future competitive procurement initiatives,” the statement asserted. “Our national presence, technical expertise, and commitment to innovation make us a formidable contender in the sanitation space.”

Commitment to Sanitation Workers and Livelihoods

Zoomlion commended government plans to enhance the remuneration of sanitation workers as part of broader sector reforms. The company reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that sweepers and frontline sanitation staff enjoy dignified and sustainable livelihoods.

“We understand that many rely on this work for their daily survival, and we remain committed to improving their conditions,” the statement continued.

Transparency and Accountability Welcomed

In response to the Presidency’s directive for audits and payment verifications tied to the expired YEA contract, Zoomlion declared its full support for accountability measures.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, we champion transparency and integrity in all our operations,” the company stated, adding that it believes such measures will further strengthen institutional structures and public confidence in the sector.

Pan-African Model in Waste Management

Zoomlion’s achievements in Ghana have resonated across the African continent. The company revealed that 24 African countries have expressed interest in replicating its waste management systems through formal agreements, feasibility studies, and concession partnerships.

“This growing recognition speaks not only to Zoomlion’s expertise but also to Ghana’s rising influence in shaping Africa’s green agenda,” the statement said.

A Shared National Vision

Zoomlion concluded its statement by aligning its mission with the government’s broader RESET agenda—Rebuilding, Equity, Sustainability, Empowerment, and Transformation. The company pledged to continue collaborating with the state and all stakeholders to advance a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Ghana.
