Residents of Denase in the Afigya Kwabre North District of the Ashanti Region have been left reeling in fear and sorrow following a deadly armed attack on Thursday night that claimed the lives of two people and left three others injured.

One of the victims has been identified as Peggy Ayelbassah, a young woman who was reportedly en route to Salaga for an admission interview at a nursing training college when she was gunned down.

The heartbreaking news was shared by the Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, in a Facebook post on Friday. The visibly shaken MP revealed that Peggy had reached out to him via WhatsApp just a day before the incident.

The violent incident occurred late Thursday when unknown assailants opened fire on a vehicle traveling through the area. According to residents and eyewitnesses, the sound of multiple gunshots sparked widespread panic.

Three other individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Offinso Saint Patrick Hospital.

Kwabena Asamoah, the Unit Committee Chairman for the Denase Electoral Area, has suggested that the incident may not have been a random robbery, but rather a calculated attack targeting specific passengers in the vehicle. He stated that 14 rounds were fired during the assault, underscoring the level of violence.

“This didn’t seem like a robbery. It appeared more like a targeted attack. The way the shooting was done, it looked like they knew who they were after,” Mr. Asamoah told reporters.

The incident has heightened fears in Denase, a community that has reportedly witnessed similar attacks in the past. Residents are now calling for enhanced security measures and swift police action to prevent further bloodshed.

As investigations continue, the Ghana Police Service has pledged to track down the perpetrators. Meanwhile, the community mourns the untimely loss of a promising young woman whose life was cut short on the cusp of her nursing career.
