The management of Suhum Government Hospital has called for urgent retooling and renovation of its emergency unit, citing overwhelming pressure due to increasing emergency cases—particularly from road traffic accidents along the Accra-Kumasi highway.
Hospital authorities report that the emergency unit records over 300 cases monthly, with a significant number of them involving accident victims from the nearby highway.
The hospital, which is strategically located near one of Ghana’s busiest transport routes, has become the primary point of care for accident-related emergencies in the area.
In an interview with Atinka News during a visit by the Municipal Chief Executive for Suhum, Lydia Ohenewaa Sarah, Anabel Naa Adoley Allotey, an emergency nurse specialist at the hospital, expressed concern over the limited resources available to the unit.

According to her, although the hospital staff are doing their best, the facility lacks critical logistics such as hospital beds, essential medical equipment, and adequate space to properly accommodate the volume of patients they receive.
she stated. She further appealed for a comprehensive renovation and retooling of the emergency department to enhance service delivery.
Nurse Allotey also highlighted a security concern, noting that some patients abscond from the facility unnoticed due to insufficient monitoring systems.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Suhum, Lydia Ohenewaa Sarah, who toured the hospital to assess its operations and challenges, acknowledged the dire situation at the emergency unit. She pledged the Assembly’s commitment to support the hospital in acquiring the necessary equipment and resources to ensure quality healthcare delivery.
The Suhum Government Hospital continues to serve as a vital healthcare center for the municipality and its surrounding communities, but stakeholders agree that immediate intervention is necessary to strengthen its capacity to respond to emergencies effectively.
