In Ghana small scale mining has been carried out many years, generating employment and income.
Currently illegal mining popularly known as galamsey has impacted the environment negatively, resulting in land degradation and water pollution.
Responding to public outcry against the negative effects of the cancar, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued an urgent directive ordering the cessation of all mining activities in and around water bodies across Ghana.
Speaking to the media Mr Tonny Duah, the Bono Regional Director of EPA said, to ensure with the directive, the EPA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology, the Minerals Commission, the Water Resources Commission and security agencies will siez equipment used in illegal mining operations.
He therefore warned that anyone caught in engaging in illegal mining activities would be arrested and prosecuted.
He further explained that there are galamsey activities currently ongoing areas around Banda Ahenkro, Branam and Wenchi in the region.
Mr Tonny Duah further commended the Omanhene of Wenchi Traditional Area Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III and elders on their swiftly intervention to stopped galamsey operations within the Wenchi traditional area.He finally urged everyone to support the fight against the activities of illegal mining.
