The Fix The Country Movement has urged the government to take urgent and decisive action against the escalating galamsey crisis by repealing Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 and declaring a state of emergency.
Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Monday, September 22, Edward Tuttor, a member of the movement, emphasised the need to confront the illegal mining issue head-on without downplaying its severity.
He praised President John Dramani Mahama for publicly recognising galamsey as a national emergency during his thank-you tour in the Western North region on July 15, 2025.
“I was happy when the president… admitted publicly that galamsey is now a national emergency,” he noted.
But Tuttor stressed that this admission must lead to immediate action.
“If it is a national emergency, we are saying that the president should declare a state of emergency,” he insisted.
He called for the repeal of LI 2462, which he believes hampers effective regulation of small-scale mining and complicates efforts to curb galamsey.
