The Fix The Country Movement has urged the government to take urgent and decisive action against the escalating galamsey crisis by repealing Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 and declaring a state of emergency.

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Monday, September 22, Edward Tuttor, a member of the movement, emphasised the need to confront the illegal mining issue head-on without downplaying its severity.

“Galamsey needs to be tackled head-on. We don’t need to massage the issues. We don’t need to pretend as if we don’t know what is going on,” Tuttor said.

He praised President John Dramani Mahama for publicly recognising galamsey as a national emergency during his thank-you tour in the Western North region on July 15, 2025.

“I was happy when the president… admitted publicly that galamsey is now a national emergency,” he noted.

But Tuttor stressed that this admission must lead to immediate action.

“If it is a national emergency, we are saying that the president should declare a state of emergency,” he insisted.

He called for the repeal of LI 2462, which he believes hampers effective regulation of small-scale mining and complicates efforts to curb galamsey.

“The problem of galamsey is a clear-cut problem and the solution is clear-cut: repeal LI 2462 and declare a state of emergency,” Tuttor stated.
