Marking the second anniversary of a harrowing mob attack that shocked the Nokoyedzen-Lartei community, leaders and family representatives have issued a renewed public appeal to Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, demanding swift and decisive action to deliver long-overdue justice.
In a statement released by Nii Lartei Nokoyedzen II, the traditional head of the Nokoyedzen-Larteiman community, the family expressed their unwavering commitment to justice and peace, despite what they describe as the “unimaginable horror and atrocities” inflicted upon them by a mob from Chinto on May 9, 2023.
The family’s message comes as a solemn reminder of the pain and loss endured, but also as a call for legal accountability, institutional support, and community healing.
Key Demands Outlined
The statement outlines four key demands to the Attorney General’s office:
Justice for Victims – The family who are based in the Nsawam – Adoagyiri Municipality of the Eastern Region calls for those responsible for the attack to be identified, prosecuted, and punished in accordance with the law.
Expedited Legal Action – Expressing frustration at delays, they urge the Attorney General to accelerate investigations and prosecutions, asserting that “justice delayed is justice denied.”
Support for Affected Families – The community calls for psychological, social, and financial support for those who suffered during and after the incident.
Compensation for Damaged Property – The family demands that those responsible provide full restitution for the destruction caused during the attack.
A Plea for Fairness and Cultural Integrity
The Nokoyedzen-Larteiman community emphasized its independence and unique cultural heritage, calling for the equal application of the law “without bias or favoritism.” They insist that all individuals charged in connection with the attack should be treated equally under the law, without interference or influence.
In a pointed statement, the family also condemned those among them who, they allege, have undermined their cause for personal gain. “Their actions will not be forgotten,” the statement read, adding that their fate lies “with the judgment of our ancestors and posterity.”
A Community Still Waiting for Justice
As they remember a day that left emotional and physical scars on the community, the Nokoyedzen-Lartei family’s message is ultimately one of resilience and resolve. “May justice prevail,” the statement concluded, “and perpetrators be held accountable for their actions.”
The family’s appeal has once again brought national attention to the lingering case, and pressure is expected to mount on justice officials to respond.
