Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and flagbearer hopeful, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has predicted a tough contest ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Speaking to journalists following the opening of nominations on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Mr. Agyapong expressed confidence in his chances, stating that his support base within the party would be critical in securing victory.

“It’s going to be tough—I’m not making any bones about it,” he admitted.

“One of my competitors has been a vice president, he’s been at the top for 16 years, and he enjoys significant visibility and name recognition. I’ve been out of the picture for 10 years, but the kind of support I’m getting from the party’s grassroots is strong.

“They remember I was one of the young men who helped build this party from scratch. Mind you, I’m the only one among the aspirants who has been elected as General Secretary.”

Mr. Agyapong, who is expected to pick up his nomination forms later this week, emphasized that he is in the race to win and restore the party’s appeal to the broader electorate.

In declaring his intention to contest, he noted: “With me, the NPP has a clear path to unity and victory. I am the surest bet to regain the people’s trust and reclaim power in the next election.”

The NPP’s flagbearer race has officially begun, with the party set to elect its next presidential candidate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
