President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Greater Accra Regional Minister and relevant development agencies to demolish structures built on waterways as part of efforts to mitigate flooding in the capital.
The directive follows the President’s inspection of drainage systems and flood-prone areas within Accra, where he assessed ongoing works aimed at improving flood resilience.
During his tour, President Mahama visited key locations, including the Abufo Achimota Bridge, Mallam Junction, and the Odawna area at Circle. He stressed the urgent need to expedite work on the Accra Academy main drain system to prevent flooding in surrounding areas such as Kaneshie and Bubuashie.
He also urged residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices to prevent drains from getting clogged, a major contributor to urban flooding. With the rainy season approaching, the President directed Dredge Masters to accelerate their dredging operations to enhance drainage capacity.
As part of his tour, the President and his team discovered a company, Caitec Motors, allegedly filling up the Ramseyer water retention basin at Mallam Junction, an action that could further worsen flooding in the area.
This initiative is part of President Mahama’s broader strategy to tackle Accra’s perennial flooding issues by ensuring proper drainage and safeguarding lives and property.
